Jorja Smith and her own style

There’s not many artists nowadays that stand out in terms of their style, but Jorja Smith is one of the exceptions. With her voice being as relaxing and soothing as waves crashing in the ocean, she has etched her style into the playlists of so many fans. She was born in Walsall, West Midlands, England to a Jamaican father and English mother. Her father, a musician, encouraged Jorja to take piano lessons at the early age of eight years old. Smith earned a scholarship to the Aldridge School of Music in England, when she was there she learned to play the oboe and studied classical singing. Needless to stay, Smith is a student of her craft and she’s just getting started.
At the age of eighteen she moved to London to pursue music and supported herself; working as a barista and making music in her free time. Some of her favorite musical genres that she listened to growing up were reggae, punk, hip-hop, and R&B. She has also cited Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, and Most Def as some of her biggest musical inspirations. As her music career began, she wrote her song “Blue Lights” and released it on Soundcloud in 2016. Within the first month of the song being released on the platform, Smith earned 400,000 plays. In May of that same year she released “ Where Did I Go?”, and shortly after she received praise from Drake himself, as he said it was his favorite song at the time.
After this, she was an opening act on Drake’s “Boy Meets World Tour” in February and March of 2017. She was then featured on two tracks “Jorja Interlude” and “Get it Together” on Drake’s 2017 album “More Life”. Later that year she got the attention of Bruno Mars and was asked to open at his 24k Magic World Tour in October and November of 2017. As Smith earned the attention of the music industry, she wrote her own songs, co-wrote songs, and performed multiple gigs in the U.S and England.
In 2018, she co-wrote, and sang “ I Am” on Kendrick Lamar’s first executive produced soundtrack album for the movie “Black Panther”. The “Black Panther” album is arguably the greatest movie soundtrack of all time, and Smith added to the soundtrack with her slow, blues and R&B style that is one of the most memorable songs on the soundtrack. She announced her first studio album “ Lost and Found” in April 2018 and had her first U.S Television performance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live”. A few months later in June 2018 she released her debut album “Lost and Found” and it was critically acclaimed by many. Her album peaked at number 1 on the UK R&B charts and 41 on the U.S charts, earning her gold certifications overseas.
It’s only been around 5 years since Jorja Smith released her first single, and she’s already made a musical impression on so many across the world. Her ability to sing and perform with a live band, perfectly compliments the instruments surrounding her. Being that she is only twenty three years old, Jorja Smith is only in the beginning of her career, winning the praise of the industry’s biggest names while creating beautiful music that is loved by so many.
